Joseph’s story
I first started studying psychology during my A-Levels and I have dedicated my life to it since then. I was always interested in helping people who were struggling or were in difficult situations; this is what inspired my decision to study my bachelors degree in Psychology at the University of Sheffield.
During my bachelors studies I volunteered for numerous projects; working with children with autism, adults with acquired brain injuries, and as the inclusions officer of the psychology committee. After graduating, I wanted to expand my knowledge of CBT, so I completed a Level 3 qualification in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy during the COVID-19 pandemic. This course was a welcome distraction from the anxieties of the pandemic, and further fuelled my desire to become a therapist.
I decided to move to the Netherlands to study my MSc in Clinical Psychology at Leiden University. Moving countries during the pandemic was difficult but I learned so much through this experience; being in such an international environment created many challenges and many exciting opportunities.
Since graduating, I worked in in the field of Harm Reduction; learning about concepts surrounding drug use, chemsex, sex work, minority stress and more. I have always wanted to help the most vulnerable members of society, and my work in Harm Reduction really helped me to do this. During this time, I began providing psychological services to clients, using my knowledge of therapy and psychology.
I adopt a client-centred approach to therapy; pulling concepts from CBT, Acceptance Commitment Therapy, and Positive Psychology. In both my personal and professional life I am a caring, open minded and non-judgemental person. I enjoy reading and broadening my knowledge of psychology in my free-time as this inspires me to research new concepts and therapy techniques which I can use in my practise.
